Making the Most of Outdoor Spaces

Summer is almost here and we're hoping you make the most out of your outdoor spaces. We've pulled together a few tips to help you design your own outdoor oasis.

Start by Making a List

How do you want your outdoor spaces to function? Are you looking for casual family lounging or more of an entertaining space? Do you want to include a designated place for al fresco dining? We love to incorporate fire pits as a great gathering spot, especially on chilly New England nights.

Your outdoor area might be big enough for all of the above, but for city dwellers, creating multi-functional spaces is essential. If you live in an urban area, perhaps there is a need inside your home not being met that you can address on a large balcony or roof deck.

Define Your Style

When choosing furniture, consider the connection to the style you have chosen inside your home so that the spaces flow nicely and feel cohesive. It’s all too tempting to purchase that entire set of matching furniture from RH or a similar retailer, though you’ll be happier in the end when you mix pieces from multiple sources to create a look that is uniquely yours.

If you like a modern aesthetic but want to keep the look cozy and comfortable, layer in outdoor rugs, soft pillows, and performance fabrics in plush textures. And don’t forget the lanterns, they are an inexpensive way to add ambiance to any outdoor setting.

Materials and Finishes

Think about the materials you want to use and how they will wear, especially if you're in a coastal location. Teak and other natural woods are beautiful but they need a lot of maintenance, whereas a woven resin or wicker can be hosed down. Not all indoor/outdoor fabrics are the same either. Pay attention to the cleaning instructions and “double rub” count to make sure you buy fabric that will stand up to the elements, kids and adult cocktails!

Finding Inspiration From Travel

For our boutique hotel designs, the courtyards are important spaces for guests to relax and gather. Think about your own past travels...was there a particular space that really resonated with you, or created an emotion you'd like to have in your everyday space? This can be a great starting point to focus your design.

Creating comfortable spaces for family to gather and enjoy time together is more important now than ever. See how we are completing the patio and poolside spaces at two of our ongoing suburban projects below.

Our Wellesley install features a mix of Janus et cie, RH, Serena & Lily, and Kettal with custom fabrics and pillows to create a cohesive design. To view the inside of this home, take a look at our portfolio.

We’ll also be in Weston late this summer to complete the outdoor spaces on the “Thoroughly Modern Classic” home in our portfolio. With an emphasis on natural textures and patterns in a neutral palette, the exterior furnishings are a true complement to the interior.

Until next time,
