What’s Inspiring Us: A Round-up of Inspos from a Month of Travel

Our latest Journal is filled with ideas inspired by stories, culture, and timeless design gathered from recent travels. These travels have reinforced how designs that span centuries can still feel fresh and relevant—and how contemporary pieces from renowned brands can blend seamlessly with classics from the past.

These excursions offered endless moments of discovery and inspiration for our work at R+Co. From Rachel’s experience at the Design Leadership Network Summit in Edinburgh, following a quick stop in London, to Kyra’s artist retreat on the Greek island of Andros, to a team trip closer to home to walk the latest and greatest at this year’s High Point Market’s fall event in North Carolina, each moment reminded us that design is more than aesthetics—it’s about crafting spaces that tell stories and strengthen connections with one another.

Here’s a peek into our travels around London, Edinburgh, Andros and High Point and the unforgettable places that sparked new design ideas!

LONDON, ENGLAND

The Art of Warm Welcomes and Cozy Retreats:

The Covent Garden Hotel, designed by Kit Kemp, combines classic British charm with quirky, eclectic touches. Kit’s work is a great reminder of the importance of balancing comfort with character and a true testament to the power of thoughtful design.

Hidden Gems in Markets and Streets:

Strolling through the stunning collection of silk fabric at Liberty London was like a dream. The collection is perfect for so many projects and possibly a bespoke dress! It’s easy to be immersed in color and character at Columbia Road Flower Market and vintage shops, where you can find an endless source of eclectic design ideas. And finally, whether you’re going for tea, lunch, or just a look around, Sketch London is one venue with such bold design choices that it feels like stepping into a surrealist painting.

Legacy of Style and Workmanship:

In Belgravia, the shops along Pimlico Road offered some of the most beautiful design details—from unique hardware to antique furniture, notably Pinch London, Soane Britain, and The Conran Shop.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND

Stories Told Through Architecture and Art:

The Virgin Hotel Edinburgh was a perfect base, with its vibrant, contemporary design reflecting the spirit of this historic city. Aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, we honored England and Scotland's history and design legacies. Stepping aboard the yacht, with its classic wood finishes and elegant detailing, brought home the beauty of timeless design.

Craftsmanship and Innovation in Scottish Design:

The Hopetoun House and McEwan Hall both made for an unforgettable highlight for the DLN Summit. Each detail—from the intricate woodwork to the storied portraits—offered a glimpse into the aristocratic Scottish lifestyle and craftsmanship. Visiting Jupiter Artland was another awe-inspiring experience, showcasing how modern art can coexist with nature. Wandering through The Port of Leith seaside architecture was the icing on the cake, a testament to the evolving beauty of Edinburgh's neighborhoods.

Boundless Creativity within Nature-Inspired Design:

The “En Plein Air” Retreat at Melisses sea-front property celebrates the harmony between architecture and the stunning seaside landscape of Andros island. A seamless connection with nature, the space highlights how thoughtful material choices can enhance a space's natural beauty.

Artistic Expression Backdropped by the Aegean:

Workshops in paint and natural dyeing, offered at the retreat, emphasize hands-on creativity inspired by the Greek landscape. This approach to design values cultural authenticity and artistry, infusing spaces with personal, handmade touches that tell a story.

Elevated Finishes and Creative Combinations:

This year’s High Point Market visit was filled with beautiful finishes and unique shapes as we looked to discover new pieces for upcoming projects. We saw a lot of pieces with elevated finishes and creative combinations of materials. From Bernhardt's clean, modern aesthetic and Palecek’s distinctive handcrafted pieces, each find inspires us to elevate our designs even further.

Innovative lighting for every room:

Lighting continues to up the game with new designs from Sean Lavin and Pooky Lighting, rooted in technology and design innovation.

Lots of Sit Tests!

This year, we’re exploring many different seating options with unique shapes while putting everything through rigorous sit tests. Thanks to designs from American Leather, with their swivel chairs, and Vilmers, with their zero-gravity recliners, for indulging us!
