Wellness Spaces Are Having a Moment

This month, we’re taking a closer look at a trend we’re seeing more and more in the design world and in our own projects: wellness rooms. These spaces support movement, relaxation, and renewal at home.

Wellness spaces are definitely having a moment. Along with home offices, areas designed for wellness activities are becoming an increasingly important part of home renovation projects. As people look to their homes to meet more of their everyday needs, they want to incorporate places to work out, recover, and sometimes just slow down without leaving home. What was once a treadmill tucked in the corner of a room is now taking up much more dedicated square footage and, in some cases, an exterior structure of its own, housing everything from a sauna to a cold plunge.

Throughout our projects, we’ve helped our clients determine how their wellness goals fit within their home renovation plans, designing everything from outdoor showers and spas to hydration centers and cold plunges.

Here’s a look at two recent projects that keep wellness top of mind:

Going all-in on Family Wellness

In our recently completed A Splash of Color project, this active family of six was looking for more than a hot tub or fitness room. They wanted a wellness center housed in a completely separate structure from the main house. With limited space surrounding their urban home, an underutilized garage proved to be the perfect opportunity for a full wellness retreat. In collaboration with NICHE Architecture + Interiors and Sea-Dar Construction, this wellness space was equipped with a sauna, cold plunge, Peloton training area, and gym.

To continue to meet this family’s wellness needs, part of the basement was transformed to include an indoor pool,  a massage table, and a dedicated space for yoga.

Extending Wellness to the Outdoors

The busy family with three young children in our Soft Modern Meets Shingle Style project wanted their Weston backyard to feel like a getaway for the entire family, with dedicated spaces where the adults could relax. Working closely with Coda Home and Sudbury Design Group, we designed a separate spa area that includes a zen-like shower and a hot tub, offering privacy and a bit of respite from the surrounding activity. Custom tile and stonework elevated both areas, creating the feeling of a five-star resort right in their own backyard.

Wellness spaces may be having a moment, but they are just one example of how homeowners continue to stretch the boundaries of what their properties can offer, creating more opportunities to enjoy daily life, gather, and make meaningful connections at home.
