6 Fashion Trends That Inspire Our Work

This month, we’re embracing the latest in fashion and its influence on interior design. From bold colors and patterns to sophisticated metallics, keep reading for six fashion trends we can’t get enough of and how they’ve inspired our design projects.

Fashion and interior design have a long, intertwined relationship, mutually influencing one another's trends. Just as fashion runways inspire clothing styles, we’re constantly inspired by areas of design like fashion to help create new ideas for our residential and hotel projects.

Social media has blurred the lines between the two art forms, creating a lot of overlap between what we wear and how we live. For interior designers, keeping up with current trends means staying abreast of the fashion world. After all, fashion is largely influenced by social and economic lifestyle patterns. A perfect example is brands like Versace and Ralph Lauren, which have created home collections that allow homeowners to extend their personal style to their living spaces.

Keeping this interdependent relationship in mind, here are six fashion trends that currently inspire us and how they have influenced our design projects.

Metallic

Fashion and interior design frequently overlap when it comes to metallic details, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to both realms. Just as a golden zipper can elevate a garment, a brass sconce can enhance a room's elegance. Much like the scones in our Gathering in the Great Room primary bathroom, metallic fixtures serve a dual purpose of function and design.

Bold colors and patterns

Vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns have been a major trend, adding a playful and expressive element to clothing and accessories. We often incorporate bold colors in our design projects to achieve a cohesive look through rich, vibrant fabrics, paints, and wallcoverings. Colors and patterns can evoke emotion, essential when creating a better connection with the space.

Textiles and fabrics

Fabrics and textures are another popular trend in today’s fashion. Plush velvets, rich silks, and fine leathers continue to grace the catwalks. These fabrics translate to sophisticated home design through luxurious throw pillows, high-end upholstery, or opulent window treatments. Similarly, trends in fabric patterns, such as florals, animal, or geometric prints, can also be seen in fashion and interior design. A perfect illustration is The Coco, a boutique hotel project in Edgartown, MA.

Quiet Luxury

Clean lines, simple silhouettes, and neutral colors have been a staple in many fashion collections, reflecting a minimalist (without labels) aesthetic. Coined “Quiet Luxury,” this subtle, understated, and refined look focuses on high-quality materials, blending soft, modern, neutral colors with accents of soft greens, blues, and other earthy hues.

Sustainability

Fashion trends often reflect broader lifestyle trends, such as the growing interest in sustainability and eco-friendly materials. This mindset has led to an increase in sustainable and environmentally conscious design practices in both fashion and interior design, such as using more sustainable materials like durable, organic fabrics and recycled plastics and metals, as well as energy-efficient design solutions.

Statement pieces

In fashion, a statement piece emphasizes bold, eye-catching clothing or accessories intended to stand out. It’s a unique and distinctive piece that adds personality and character to a look.  In interiors, statement pieces can be custom design elements that help to elevate the design. Light fixtures are a great example of this, a design element that draws the eye upward while also complementing the overall aesthetic. Whether it’s an elaborate chandelier or a custom-illuminated installation, the right light fixture can add both functionality and style.
